Fellow Collector: Maybe you
remember my Dept 56
Display Tips and Display Designs eBooks which I have sold on eBay for
many years. (As a matter of fact there probly is an auction going on
now for them - just search eBay for "Dept 56 Display tips". This year
they are being sold as a CD package and will have an image as shown
below.)
![]() Anyways,
as for the background.....
After we spend hours setting up our displays we look at them with much satisfaction. But usually the one distracting thing about them is the white (or green or blue or wood or...) background. Well, I have come up with an original, handmade backdrop. Here are two photos of one as seen in my display, which is set on a TV cabinet. ![]() ![]() This background is totally original and unique. I just think about what I want, start picking some fabric (a lot of batiks are used) and then begin cutting, designing and laying them out. I like mountains, trees and rivers so they are always in them. Here is the background by itself--- The background is made entirely of quilt store quality fabrics (no cheap Walmart fabric is used). The trees, mountains and what not, are made and applied with what is referred to as "fused raw edge applique". This means that the individual pieces (like trees) are cut out of a material and then appliqued using fusing. I embellish the background with a variety of things, like angelina fibers fused together to give the shiniess of the sunset and small crystals which are fused on to make stars. A piece of cotton batting is sandwiched between the top design and the back - which is another piece of high quality material. This entire background is then quilted. During this quilting step, I sew around all the objects (trees, mountains, etc) and any other area that needs to be sewed in order to maintain its 'quilt look'. I bind the edges and sew a sleeve on the back which can be used to place a rod in to hang it. (in the display above the display is held up with three push pins. This design measures about 70 inches long and 17 inches high. If you don't need that full length, you can fold the outer sides backwards - tucking them underneath. However, if you do this, you may have to cut a slot or two in your sleeve to get a rod in (or just use long push pins to tack the background to the wall.) You can also buy small quilt holding clips at your local quilt store. ![]() Here is a close up of the left side ![]() Here is the middle - sunset Here is the right side ![]() Here is a close up of the middle - showing the fused angelina fibers, crystal stars and sewing around the edges of the objects and some in the sky. ![]() Here is the back of

I hope you like it too and place your bid. If you have any questions, please contact me at Betsi at Dept56BackDrops.com (obviously eliminate the spaces when e-mailing) Here are Some Photos of One More Backdrop I Did ![]() ![]()
